What is a Serger Sewing Machine and Why Do You Need One?

A serger sewing machine is a machine with 3, 4, or 5 threads that work in unison to create an overlock stitch hem at a seam. Typically, a serger will stitch the two pieces of material together at the seam while also trimming and finishing the edges at the same time. This type of stitch will allow a stretchy material seam to stretch. In contrast, a straight seam sewn from a regular sewing machine will not stretch. A serged seam will look more professional and be more durable in the long run!

What is Differential Feed?

A serger with differential feed allows multiple sewing feed and speed options. The machine can be set to have the feed sew with an even feed, the same as on your regular sewing machine.  However, the feed can also be sped up on woven fabrics to create a ruffle. Additionally, it can be set to sew a wavy edge.  You may want to create some of these effects at the bottom of a dress or towards the end or top of a sleeve.

If You Have a Serger, Do You still Need a Regular Sewing Machine?

While a serger has the ability to do some regular sewing machine tasks, it is not able to fully replace your regular sewing machine. For example, if you need to sew buttonholes, zippers, facings or do top stitching,  you will definitely also still need a regular sewing machine.

This Brother 1034d is easy to pick up and learn for serging beginners. A couple of nice features of this machine is the ability to use regular thread spools as well as regular needles.  It will use the same needles as your everyday machine which is nice. The foot pedal is super responsive for good speed control. It is also easy to thread compared to other sergers.

One thing to note is this machine needs to be pre-oiled before you start to use it for the first time.  Also note that it does not do a Coverlock type of stitch like you would find at the bottom of a t-shirt, for example. If you are looking for that stitch, you will need to go with a higher end machine.

All in all, the 1034D is a solid serging machine at a really great price! Click here to buy now.
