Mini Sewing Machine Information and Favorites
Who can use a Mini Sewing Machine?
These Mini little machines are super basic, but perfect for beginners of all ages. Mini sewing machines are ideal for people who don’t have a lot of space in their home. These small machines can easily be tucked away out of site, if need be.
The best mini sewing machines available on the market today are lightweight and portable so that you can take them to your sewing class. You can also sew in any room of the house, or take it over to a friend’s house. So these little machines are just perfect for anyone on the go who wants to take their machine with them!
A Few of our Favorites
The Michley LSS 202 and LSS 505 are two of our favorite models. They both get excellent reviews on Amazon, and contain a few more features than the other sew mini’s. They are both portable machines and good for smaller projects. The LSS 505 includes eight unique stitches (3 zigzag) and has both forward as well as reverse sewing, which can really come in handy. One other feature we like is it can sew on batteries and without electricity, which makes this machine quite convenient. It also comes with a bright LED sewing light so you can see well while using your machine!
The Janome Fast Lane, reviewed on our Best Kids Sewing Machine homepage, is also a favorite in the mini sewing machine market. While the one we review is fuchsia, these Janome sew machines actually come in a large variety of colors, including a fun bright yellow and a pretty purple! While made of hard plastic, this Janome is still a solid, reliable, quality product, and able to sew through a few more layers than the other minis.
All three of these machines are extremely inexpensive, so should fit well into your sewing machine budget! They are really all you need for the basics or a quick fix. Scroll down to see our more detailed mini sewing machine reviews.
Note: We decided to not review the Singer Pixie plus craft machine, since this Singer mini sewing machine did not get the best Amazon reviews and we found it hard to operate.
Can a Mini Sew like a Regular Sewing Machine?
A mini sewing machine can do the simple tasks that a regular sewing machine can do. However, for a larger project or for sewing buttonholes or thicker material, a regular sewing machine is going to work better. The mini machine is also going to have less of a unique stitch variety to choose from.
Another reason some people like to buy these smaller machines is to have a second machine for their vacation home. They like to just have something there in case they have unexpected clothing problems and need to make some quick repairs. Having this second small sewing machine allows them the ability to sew with a machine, but without having the full expense of the regular machine – which makes life just a little easier and saves money!

Top 7 Best Small Sewing Machines in 2018
Our reviewers have rated this Michley LSS 505 machine as the best mini sewing machine on the market today. This eight stitch sewing machine comes with some extra options that other sewing machines that are minis don’t offer. This spunky little machine offers forward and reverse sewing as well as automatic thread rewinding for convenience. It has an easy drop-in bobbin. One of the cons is that it’s not great with super thick fabric, but actually works great with pajama flannel and with most other regular thickness fabric. Just be sure to loosen the tension some for the slightly thicker materials. Another downside is that the pedal is a bit small and toy like, so using the hand control is easier.
Since this machine isn’t pink, this is a great machine for a boy or a girl. The Michley LSS 505 is best for beginners and for simple or basic mending tasks. This is a fantastic portable machine at just over 5 pounds total weight. You will love using this machine with your kids, and it comes at an excellent inexpensive price!
The Nex sewing machine is our reviewers’ choice as a close second to the Michley! It uses a regular needle and comes with 12 stitches and can even perform the craft of button holing! It can autowind, seam and hem very well. This great little mini machine includes a thread cutter and a built in measuring tape, which can come in handy! The Nex comes with a tension adjuster, a well lit sewing light and has both high and low speeds. Similar to the Michley, it isn’t great with thick material, but is able to sew up to 2.5 mm which is equivalent to 6 layers of thin denim – not too bad. It runs well on batteries and is very lightweight – the perfect machine to take anywhere!
This cute mini Nex comes with both forward and reverse stitching and can be controlled with the foot pedal or by the hand switch. This machine saves space and is best for children and beginners. Be sure to follow the manual closely upon setup for the best results. Click here for additional Amazon reviews! Excellent little machine for the money!
The Janome Honeycomb is the perfect mini machine for beginners, kids, or even an experienced sewist wanting a second smaller machine for travel. Made along the same assembly lines as Janome’s higher end machines, this machine also includes some of the great features we love from the Janome brand. It has a nifty reverse switch that sets it apart from many of the other mini machines that don’t reverse. With a top loading bobbin, a push pull bobbin winder, and a nifty stitch selection dial, this machine contains some nice basic features for added sewing convenience.
One thing to note is some reviews complain of the machine not having a light for sewing. This would be a nice to have, but is easily fixed by having a desk light on your sewing machine table next to your machine.
We love this cute Janome machine, and it even comes in a couple more great colors including Merlot and Beachcomber. We think this is a nice second machine to have around the house as well as a great beginner mini machine for the youngest of kids.
The Michley LSS-202 is an expensive mini sewing machine that comes with double threading, and automatic thread rewind. It has a choice of using either the foot pedal or hand switch – choose whichever you are more comfortable with for starts. It makes threading easy with a top drop-in bobbin.
This Michley has an electric plug-in or can also takes four AA batteries.
It’s not a high end sewing machine, but is good for the price (around $20!) and is a usable machine for a beginner, for a child, or for small hemming projects here and there. The Michley can sew several materials, and can even sew fabric as thick as denim! While we recommend the LSS 505 as our best mini sewing machine, the LSS 202 is about half the price and still works well with a few less features (mainly less unique stitches and no reverse stitch).
The Imax Mini is very portable at just two pounds total weight. Take it to sewing class or sew in any room of the house, this easy to use machine is a good little machine for the cheap price!
This machine also has a dual power method of either batteries or a plug-in.
The Imax comes with a handy light on the machine so you can see exactly what you’re sewing. It also comes with a nifty built-in thread cutter, so you don’t have to constantly be reaching for the scissors. This compact machine offers the choice of the foot pedal or ON/OFF button for starting.
Some cons of this machines are it does not contain reverse stitching and it only does a straight stitch. So if you want a few more features, be sure to go with one of our higher rated minis. That being said, this machine will still do the trick for your small projects and be a decent little machine for the tween sewing enthusiasts.
The Amado Mini Sewing Machine is fairly popular in the mini machine market. It receives some excellent reviews on Amazon! It comes with 2 built in stitches and double speed. A sewist can choose to use the push button switch or the foot pedal to operate the machine.
Similar to some of the others this comes with a plug and also can be used with 4 AA batteries when there is no electricity or compatibility plug when outside of the US.
This mini machine comes with automatic bobbin winding and is easy to thread. It has good adjustable speed, is user-friendly and easy to learn, and is really perfect for anyone just starting out sewing!
The Anself Electric Mini Sewing Machine comes with low or high speed settings so the speed can be adjusted for your project or for a child first starting out sewing. Like the others it offers the choice of using the button or the pedal to control the machine. It comes with double thread sewing and automatic bobbin winding.
This machine can be battery operated as well as having a plug.
This portable and lightweight machine can be taken almost anywhere to sew. One negative is that it does not come with reverse stitching like some of the other mini machines. While this machine is ok, if you have a little more to spend, we do recommend one of the other machines that come with a few more mini machine features.

In Summary, of the machines listed here, our choice for the best mini sewing machine is the Michley LSS 505 Lil Sew & Sew. While Michley has other models (like the LSS 202 Lil) that are less expensive, if you are looking for a mini sewing machine that gives you the most value for your money, this machine is it! This is the one which makes learning a little easier with its reverse stitching and automatic thread rewinding. The Nex sewing machine is a close second, including more unique stitches and is the only one we’ve reviewed that includes a 4-step buttonhole. The Janome fast lane (listed on the homepage) is also well worth the slightly more expensive price. We also love the adorable Janome Honeycomb. I find that I almost always like the Janome brand of every type of machine I try. Janome is just a well made brand. Whether you get the Michley, the Nex, or the Janome, you are not going to go wrong with these all being great choices! Click here to buy from Amazon the best mini sewing machine for you!
