Best Sewing Machine for Quilting Buyer’s Guide 2018

Time and Efficiency. Back when there was more time to hand quilt, that was the way Quilting was done.  However, these days many of us just don’t have the time, but we still love quilting.  So we have employed technology to create efficiencies for us.  Investing in the right quilting machine, can make things so much easier than in the olden days.

Increased Professional Looking Quality. While handmade quilts are something to treasure, using a machine these days can give your quilt such a fine look at the seams.  Instead of uneven stitching and misaligned blocks, by using a quilting machine your final product will instead have a more uniform and aligned professional looking touch. The secure stitching from a machine will also enhance the quality and durability of your quilt.

Costs. Well, as you likely already know, quilting is not an inexpensive hobby or business.  A good quality quilting machine can definitely be expensive, but a great quilting machine can also pay for itself in that it will be a huge time saver – and as they say, time is money!

User Friendly Machine. There is definitely a learning curve to a quilting machine.  We absolutely recommend first testing out your machine on a few squares rather than on an actual quilt, and adjusting your settings to get your thread tension just right.  You don’t want to have to rip out and redo a bunch of seams because your settings were not set properly for the quilting material you are working with. We highly recommend watching some YouTube videos on quilting, as they can be very helpful.  Scroll down for one of our favorite useful quilting videos below our embroidery machine reviews.

  • Lightweight
  • One Hand Thread Cutter

  • Extension Table
  • ¼ “ Seam Footer
  • Automatic Needle Threader

This portable Janome Jem Gold is lightweight enough to carry to your Quilting class. But don’t let it’s light weight fool you. This machine sews like a champ! It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the computerized machine, but it does quilting beautifully. This isn’t a machine for heavy duty sewing, but it sews smoothly and is good quality at a reasonable price.

  • 170 Stitch Functions
  • 8 Presser Feet
  • Monogramming Font
  • Wide Detachable Table
  • Spring Action Specialty Quilting Foot
  • Computerized
  • Easy Needle Threading

This fabulous computerized Brother machine is packed with features! It is much more than a quilting machine. It can do monogramming and has a large variety of decorative stitches. This reliable machine is so versatile that you can use the foot pedal or turn it off and use the machine to control the speed. One thing to note, there is not a lot of space under the free arm, and the presser foot only lifts about an inch. This is not ideal for quilting with thicker material, more less the batting. All said, this is a great price for a solid computerised sewing machine!
